The Clatskanie Together Coalition is a community partnership in and around Clatskanie, Oregon founded in 2000. The Coalition works together to create an environment free from drug crimes and substance abuse throughout the community for children and families that promotes healthy beliefs and clear standards. Through a federal grant form the US Department of Justice’s Community Capacity Development Office, they are a Weed and Seed site aimed to prevent, control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in designated high-crime neighborhoods across the country. The strategy involves a two-pronged approach: law enforcement agencies and prosecutors cooperate in “weeding out” violent crime and drug abuse; and “seeding” brings human services to the area, encompassing prevention, intervention, treatment, and neighborhood revitalization. A community-oriented policing component bridges the weeding and seeding strategies. Officers obtain helpful information from area residents for weeding efforts while they aid residents in obtaining information about community revitalization and seeding resources.
The Regional Research Institute for Human Services (RRI) at Portland State University provides evaluation consultation for the Clatskanie Weed and Seed grant. The RRI was established in 1972 and is a part of the Graduate School of Social Work. It provides research and evaluation for community-based organizations with an ongoing focus of including consumers of services in all aspects of the research process. The project period is November 2008 –November 2009.
