Experience Corps is a national, intergenerational mentoring program linking school students with mentors, age 55 and older. The Experience Corps Program in Portland is hosted by Metropolitan Family Service (MFS) and serves eleven schools in the Portland-metropolitan area. The program recruits, trains and places five to seven mentors per school each year. Each mentor serves six to ten children each year in a one-on-one capacity. The mentors work with students in classrooms during the school day, and lead small groups and one-on-one activities after school.
The PSU Regional Research Institute is evaluating the impact of the program on the mentors. Methodology consists of an anonymous mentor survey at the beginning and end of each school year and focused discussions with separate groups of mentors each year. Funding is provided by the NW Health Foundation. The grant period is March 2007-February 2010.
