Serving Pregnant and Post-partum Women and their Children at Project Network

Weku is designed to provide comprehensive services to pregnant and post-partum women enrolled in Project Network, a residential substance abuse/mental health treatment program for women in North/Northeast Portland, operated under by Lifeworks Northwest.  Weku builds on Project Network’s existing services to fully support pregnant and post-partum women in their recovery at a time when their family needs them the most and those needs place an added strain on their recovery.  Project Network strives to provide a gender and culturally specific program, serving mainly African-American women and their children.  Regional Research Institute at Portland State University is conducting the evaluation of Weku. 

Existing Project Network Services:

  1. Residential care for women and their children (birth - 6 years). Including:
    1. 6 months residential
    2. 3 months intensive transitional
    3. 3-6 months outpatient
  2. Substance abuse assessment and treatment
  3. Mental health & dual diagnosis assessment & treatment
  4. Trauma-informed, culturally-specific, relationship-based approach
  5. Case management
  6. Parent training
  7. Domestic violence counseling
  8. Job-readiness training
  9. GED program and educational tutoring
  10. Licensed daycare
  11. Transitional housing and support
  12. Developmental assessments of preschool-age children
  13. Therapeutic interventions for eligible preschoolers
  14. Pediatric health care
  15. Family counseling
  16. Transportation while in residence
  17. Needed support services for Significant Other: DV, Fathering, Couples & Men’s Trauma Groups

Additional Weku Services for Pregnant and Post-partum Women:

  1. Intensive family case management
  2. Employment placement, internships, case management & coaching
  3. Health education
  4. Pro-social peer-support network, providers & mentors
  5. Individualized evening mother-child interaction plans, supervised by parent-child trainer
  6. Developmental assessments of children aged 0-3 years and older children with whom the mother will reunite
  7. Developmental and/or mental health therapy for all children in residence and older children with whom the mother will reunite
  8. Inclusion of older children and significant other in family counseling, reunification planning & relevant treatment activities
  9. Case management services for children, including social services, education, & financial entitlements
  10. Home visits & off-hour support for women & their families
  11. Transportation during transition back to the community
  12. A continuum of housing case management from transitional to permanent


 

The project is currently in its 2nd three year funding cycle with a grant from the U.S. Substance Abuse Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. This second grant period is October 2006-September 2009.
