Serving Pregnant and Post-partum Women and their Children at Project Network
Weku is designed to provide comprehensive services to pregnant and post-partum women enrolled in Project Network, a residential substance abuse/mental health treatment program for women in North/Northeast Portland, operated under by Lifeworks Northwest. Weku builds on Project Network’s existing services to fully support pregnant and post-partum women in their recovery at a time when their family needs them the most and those needs place an added strain on their recovery. Project Network strives to provide a gender and culturally specific program, serving mainly African-American women and their children. Regional Research Institute at Portland State University is conducting the evaluation of Weku.
Existing Project Network Services:
- Residential care for women and their children (birth - 6 years). Including:
- 6 months residential
- 3 months intensive transitional
- 3-6 months outpatient
- Substance abuse assessment and treatment
- Mental health & dual diagnosis assessment & treatment
- Trauma-informed, culturally-specific, relationship-based approach
- Case management
- Parent training
- Domestic violence counseling
- Job-readiness training
- GED program and educational tutoring
- Licensed daycare
- Transitional housing and support
- Developmental assessments of preschool-age children
- Therapeutic interventions for eligible preschoolers
- Pediatric health care
- Family counseling
- Transportation while in residence
- Needed support services for Significant Other: DV, Fathering, Couples & Men’s Trauma Groups
Additional Weku Services for Pregnant and Post-partum Women:
- Intensive family case management
- Employment placement, internships, case management & coaching
- Health education
- Pro-social peer-support network, providers & mentors
- Individualized evening mother-child interaction plans, supervised by parent-child trainer
- Developmental assessments of children aged 0-3 years and older children with whom the mother will reunite
- Developmental and/or mental health therapy for all children in residence and older children with whom the mother will reunite
- Inclusion of older children and significant other in family counseling, reunification planning & relevant treatment activities
- Case management services for children, including social services, education, & financial entitlements
- Home visits & off-hour support for women & their families
- Transportation during transition back to the community
- A continuum of housing case management from transitional to permanent
The project is currently in its 2nd three year funding cycle with a grant from the U.S. Substance Abuse Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. This second grant period is October 2006-September 2009.
